Chamonix is an ideal choice for family skiing/activity holidays for all ages and enjoys one of the most beautiful settings of any resort.
Skiing - The Mont Blanc area offers an amazing 500km of piste - though not all suited to young children. The scenic pistes of Le Tour offer easy runs for a family day out and beginners can enjoy the nursery slopes of La Vormaine, Les Chosalets, Le Savoy and Les Planards. For intermediates, areas like Col de Balme and Tête de Balme offer quiet cruising but the best skiing is to be found in areas like Grands Montets where the pistes are much more challenging. Le Brévent and La Flégère have a good mix of blue and red runs too. Confident intermediate over 12's can take advantage of a guided trip on the Vallée Blanche - a fun descent with some breathtaking scenery. It is worth noting that to get the best out of the whole Chamonix ski area, or indeed the entire Mont Blanc massif, it is worth having your own transport, although the free bus transportation between ski areas is frequent and very well organized.
Summer - Mountain holidays are a great alternative for families bored of the beach. Sitting below the shadow of Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc, Chamonix is regarded as the leading summer mountain resort in the world. Kids can try out rock climbing and family courses can be arranged. There are many walks starting from the town or, for the lazy, the cable cars and mountain railways get you into the heart of the glaciers and lakes with minimal effort. Mountain bikes can also be taken up on cable cars for fun and effortless descents. Rafting is available for all ages above 10. On hot days the town pool is very large and provides children's and toddler's pools. There is a water theme park a couple of hours drive away in Chamberry. Other day trip possibilities include trains to Switzerland, the city of Geneva and day trips to Italy through the Mont Blanc tunnel.
